Classification Essay ââ¬âThe Types of Kids that Make Up My Generation One of the things that has troubled me as of late is my generation. The generation that is referred to is the group of people currently aged 15-21 - whether or not this is a generation, so to speak, is irrelevant. These people, for the most part, disturb me. It frightens me to know that the people that Ive grown up with are going to be leading the country and the world in the decades to come. The overwhelming majority of the kids that Ive come in contact with over the past few years are apathetic monsters. They dont care about school, they dont care about themselves, and they dont care about their future. The smokers say that smoking is a way to relieve the many stresses that they have to put up with during the day. How did the these kids put up with stress before they turned to smoking? The drinkers say that drinking is a way to loosen up and have fun. How did these kids have fun before they turned to drinking? The druggies are the worst of all - theyre the scum of the earth. The person who wants to risk their life in order to see purple cats and singing elephants are ignorant sheep. Lets not forget about the insane prices of living a life of drugs, either. A druggie essentially throws his life away once he turns to drugs. Who wants a self-deprecating burnout for President? Kids dont care about their future. This point ties together the previous two points. The kids that dont try in school and turn to a drug of some sort in order to get through the hardships of their days arent going anywhere twenty years from now. Getting rid of such a significant percentage of the population leaves a smaller group of people in comparision to lead the country in the future. Even then, there are those left that care only about money or love as opposed to their overall well-being in the long run. Money is needed to buy necessities, maybe go to a baseball game or have a night out with friends. People have an affliction for money. The world view says money is good and the need for more is what is acceptable in society. Honestly, money makes one put aside their family and put heavy strains on relationships. Also, with the need for money becoming more eminent, careless and bad decisions are being made in trying to salvage every bit of it. Money has great qualities and is needed in everyday life, but some people feel that money corrupts oneââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Money doesnââ¬â¢t affect families alone, but also other relationships in oneââ¬â¢s life. People want a relationship whether it be a significant other, best friend or even a pet. They love that person or thing and do not want to hurt it in any way. Money does not have feelings, on the other hand, it has power. It has the power to control the feelings of people. For example, two colleagues go and eat lunch. They did all their business dealings together and were fairly close. Financially they are both stable and make close to the same amount. After a couple months in, one colleague loses their job and digs himself a deep hole. He asks the other if he would like to have lunch again, but the colleague says it would be better if they did not. He was never heard from again. Why would he do that to someone that was supposed to be his friend? Well, thatââ¬â¢s what money does. Money gives people a level of pride which could possibly knock out a few good relationships because they are not in the same ââ¬Å"classâ⬠. Then, the people who were not in the same ââ¬Å"classâ⬠are affected greatly and try to get to the level of their acquaintance. This could lead making regretful decisions. Money can take control of a personââ¬â¢s mind so that they do something that they would have never thought of doing before. Money is persuasive enough to get someone to do anything. Engle v. US Essay SUMMARYEngle v. Vitale was the first case brought to the Supreme Court that used the establishment clause to remove religious activities that until this point had been used as a part of public observances. The First Amendment bars any enforcement of any law respecting an establishment of religion and the Fourteenth Amendment makes this applicable to the States. For that reason, state officials can not write an official state prayer and require that it be recited in the public schools, even if the prayer is nondenominational and students who wish to remain silent or be excused are allowed to do so during the recitation of the prayer. The parents of ten students brought this issue to the New York State Court maintaining that the use of the official prayer in the public schools was contrary to the beliefs, religions, or religious practices of both themselves and their children. The question that was reviewed by the Supreme Court of The United States was whether New York overstepped the boundaries when they financed a religious exercise. The New York Court said that the prayer given does not conform to all of the tenets of the Jewish, Unitarian, and Ethical Culture groups. The Supreme Court ruled that, though the prayer was nondenominational and students had the option of whether or not to recite the prayer and not be penalized for failure to do so, the state of New York and the school board had violated the Constitution of the United States and the rights of the students attending the public schools. Though many Americans still disagree with the verdict of the court, the ruling still stands today. OPINIONSThe opinion of the Court was delivered by Justice Black. The Court said: Shortly after the practice of reciting the Regents prayer was adopted by the School District, the parents of ten pupils brought this action in a New York State Court insisting that use of this official prayer in the public schools was contrary to the beliefs, religions, or religious practices of both themselves and their children. The New York Court of Appeals, over the dissents of Judges Dye and Fuld, sustained an order of the lower state courts which had upheld the power of New York to use the Regents prayer as a part of the daily procedures of its public schools so long as the schools did not compel any pupil to join in the prayer over his or his parents objection. We granted certiorari to review this important decision involving rights protected by the First and Fourteenth Amendments. The court continued by saying, We think that by using pubic school system to encourage recitation of the Regents prayer, the State of New York has adopted a practice wholly inconsistent with the Establishment Clause. There can, of course, be no doubt that New Yorks program of daily classroom invocation of Gods blessings as prescribed in the Regents prayer is a religious activity. It is a solemn avowal of divine faith and supplication for the blessings of the Almighty. The nature of such a prayer has always been religious; none of the respondents has denied this. The petitioners contend among other things that the state laws requiring or permitting use of the Regents prayer must be struck down as a violation of the Establishment Clause because that prayer was composed by governmental officials as a part of a governmental program to further religious beliefs. For this reason, petitioners argue, the States use of the Regents prayer in its public school system breaches the constitutional wall of separation between Church and State. The Wedding At Cana -- The Gospel Of John The Gospel of John The Wedding at Cana The story of the wedding at Cana follows the standard form of a miracle story. The setting comes first in verses one and two. The preparation of the miracle occurs in verses three through five. The miracle is actually performed in verses six through eight. A conclusion wraps everything up in verses nine through eleven, and verse twelve is a transitional link into what follows (O'Day, 1995). There I very little in the way of setting for this miracle story. It takes place at Cana in Galilee. Cana was probably what is now called Kef Kenna. It is about four miles northeast of Nazareth. It is possible that Jesus' family had moved to Cana. Mary is mentioned as a guest. Some scholarly legends say that Mary was the aunt of the bride. Joseph is not mentioned, leading most scholars to believe he had already died. There is also a vague reference to Jesus' brothers or disciples depending on the translation. Usually all or most of the women would be helping out with the festivities. Mary would most likely be a part of this entourage of caterers, and therefore would have known that the wine was running low. (St. John, 1995). In the story of the wedding at Cana, Mary's charity and her prominent faith in Jesus' power are her two most noticeable features. In verse three she points out the lack of wine to her son. The problem is established, however Mary does not ask anything explicit of Jesus - she only draws her Son's attention to the need (Haenchen, 1984). At first glance the crisis appearse to only be connected to earthly drink. In Israel at the time, wedding celebrations lasted for days. In the case of a virgin bride they could last up to a week (Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, 1964). During the course of the wedding celebration relative and friends of the wedding couple and their family would come and go. Many times even people passing through would join in on the celebration. Wine was a critical part of meals in general, the wedding, and the creation of a festive atmosphere. The hosts would be extremely embarrassed if the wine ran out, and it would be a very negative beginning for a marri age (Fuller & Kearns, 1990). Jesus replies in a tone that comes off harsh to contemporary ears. The first part of his answer is a widely used phrase in the Old Testament and Judaism in general, and the Hellenistic world. It never means, What concern is that of yours and mine? Depending on different nuances such as tone of voice it translates better to What would you have me do? or Leave me in peace. It displays certain aloofness on the part of Jesus towards Mary (St. John, 1995). The rest of Jesus' words can also come off very abrasive. Jesus addresses Mary as Woman where the reader might have expected a gentler Mother. It is not a rude, hostile usage. The term is respectful, and Jesus uses it often when talking with women including the Samaritan woman at the well. It is, however, unusually to refer to ones mother. It again creates an aloofness, a distance between Jesus and his mother. It downplays their blood relationship. The Lord does not act as a result of human prompting, even if that prompting comes from his mother. He acts only in accordance with the Father's will (Lightfoot, 1963). The words spoken by Jesus, My hour has not yet come, is characteristically Johannine. It is clear that the hour Jesus if referring to is his glorification and death, which leads to the salvation of all. The reference to the hour alludes to this event, and can be understood symbolically to represent Jesus' blood. The reader is shown that there is greater meaning to the story than what is simply happening (Meeks, 1988). Although rebuked, Jesus' mother continues with instruction to the waiters. She speaks the famous words; Do whatever he tells you. These words hearken back to the words Pharaoh says about Joseph as he also solves a problem of scarcity (Gen. 41:55).
